Abstract

The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of physical education (PE) teacher training based on a lesson study held in the Republic of Uganda. The New World Kirkpatrick Model, which is a modification of Kirkpatrick’s 4-level evaluation method, was used for evaluation of PE teacher training. This model divides training into 4 levels to allow evaluation at each level. 2 PE teacher training programs were targeted in this research. After the training, we distributed a questionnaire to the participants. The KJ method was used for inductive classification of the free description part of the questionnaire, and the results were applied for level 1 and level 2 evaluations. In addition, 18 months after the training, interviews were conducted to focus on one school. For the interview data, SCAT was used to create a story line, which was then applied for level 3 and level 4 evaluations. This research revealed 3 key points. First, the content and formation of the training should be tailored to the country or region where the training is held. Furthermore, participants offer a better response if paper materials are available for PE teachers to use in teaching. Second, for PE lessons in developing countries, PE teachers who observe lessons learn practical skills by appreciating the perspective of the students, and it is important to learn how to create teaching aids that may otherwise be lacking. In addition, if there is opportunity for all participants to conduct lessons or to observe those of other participants, it is possible to appreciate lessons from a more diversified perspective. Third, it was clarified that the training form of lesson study helps to improve the motivation of PE teachers in developing countries to learn spontaneously. On the other hand, it was suggested that changes in the participants’ school system are difficult to implement. Therefore, in order to influence the school system, it is important to introduce PE lesson studies in teacher training and to carry out continuous and systematic implementation.
