In 2015, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare published the “Pharmacy Vision for Patients”, showing a role that community pharmacies should play as the bearers of the comprehensive community care system. Nutrition care plays a key part in playing a wide range of roles, from “health support for local residents” to “responding to people with severe long-term care.” Pharmacists are required to involve in nutritional care tailored to each patient by coordinating with various health professions such as doctors, nurses, public health nurses, and dietitians, while considering the interactions between nutrition and medicines. However, at present, the pharmacy education model core curriculum has not yet included a comprehensive educational program to learn and practice medicine, nutrition, and multidisciplinary collaboration. This article will introduce the significance and issues of introducing nutritional pharmacies as one of the new specialized fields of pharmacy education from the perspective of pharmacists involved in home medical care and supplements.
