The rapid component, usually referred to as pulse amplitude, is the manifestation of the pumping action of the heart as modified by peripheral vascular mechanisms. The slower component, which is referred to as blood volume, reflects the overall engorgement of the area. It is not a periodic wave but a transient response. An infraslow wave (ISP), which is observed in the plethysmogram on the ear but not on the finger or forehead, is different from the above two components. ISP is a periodic infraslow wave like a sine wave, whose period is 7 to 12sec.
ISP, skin potential reflex (SPR), and heart rate (HR) were recorded during paired-associate learning in Exp. I, and during mental arithmetic works in which level of motivation was manipulated by task instructions (task-orientation, ego-orientation, and punishment procedure) in Exp. II.
In Exp. II, 34 Ss were divided into 3 groups. The mental arithmetic works were performed under task-orientation instruction for all groups in the first half period, and under 3 different instructions for each group in the latter half period.
The results were as follows (Exp. I): In Exp. I, it was observed that ISP, SPR, and HR changed during the learning process as shown in Fig. 1. This suggested that ISP could be a new physiological correlate of psychic tension. The results of Exp. I seemed to indicate that each measure of ISP, SPR, and HR has different response specificity.
The findings in Exp. II were as follows: 1. The increase of ISP and HR caused by task instruction was statistically significant (ISP: p<.001, HR: p<.0001). 2. A statistical test showed that there was a significant difference between the result after task instruction and that during mental arithmetic work (ISP: p<.01, HR: p<.01). 3. The habituation during mental arithmetic work was statistically significant in SPR and HR (SPR: p>.00002, HR: p<.05), but not in ISP. 4. In case of SPR and HR, there was a statistically significant difference among control group, ego-oriented group, and punishment group (SPR: p<.05, HR: p<.01). In other words, the increase of motivation was accompanied by the increase of SPR and HR. In case of ISP, no significant difference was found among the 3 groups. However, a significant difference was observed between the control group and the ego-oriented group (p<.05), although no statistically significant difference was observed between the control group and the punishment group. 5. The results of Exp. I and Exp. II suggest that HR has a close relation to psychic tension with anxiety, SPR has a remarkable orienting reflex function, and ISP corresponds to the psychic tension which accompanies any performance without the above two components being present. It was shown that the concept of psychic tension could be differentiated in terms of physiological correlates.
