Abstract
From January 2014 to May 2017, we have experienced four cases of segmental arterial mediolysis (SAM) diagnosed histopathologically. All four patients were men aged from 60 to 88. Emergency surgery was performed in all cases, and SAM was diagnosed from the extirpated specimen which demonstrated characteristic findings such as vacuolar degeneration of tunica media. Of these four patients, three patients are alive. Only one patient died of hepatic infarction on the 36th postoperative day, in that correlation between his death cause and SAM was obscure. This paper describes our four cases and a total of 107 cases which could be surveyed from the Japanese literature to clarify epidemiological aspects and characteristics of SAM including common affected sites.
