Abstract
Rim enhancement is one of the characteristic findings in contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that suggest a malignant breast tumor. We present a case of adenoma of the nipple that showed rim enhancement. A 39-year-old woman noticed a mass in her nipple and visited our hospital. Palpation during the examination revealed a subcutaneous mass on the nipple, which was further identified as a hypoechoic mass using ultrasonography. Contrast-enhanced MRI revealed a tumor demonstrating rim enhancement. However, only benign epithelial cells were obtained in cytology tests. We performed tumorectomy via the transverse incision of the nipple and diagnosed the tumor as an adenoma of the nipple. The results of the cosmetic surgery were excellent. As our results demonstrate that adenoma of the nipple may also exhibit rim enhancement in contrast-enhanced MRI similar to that observed with breast cancer, it is important to consider this disease when confirming diagnosis and treatment to avoid over-diagnosis and -treatment.
