Abstract
Cervical polyps are the most common disease found in the uterine cervices of middle-aged women. Most polyps are benign; they are rarely malignant, we encountered a rare case of carcinoma in situ arising in a cervical polyp and herein report on it.
Patient was 55-year-old woman whose chief complaint was atypical genital bleeding. Atypical cells were found on the cervical smear that was performed on November 6, 1989. Parient underwent a thorough examination at our hospital on November 20, 1989.
Examination with a speculum revealed that a cervical polyp was pedunculated and projected from the cervical os. Polypectomy, biopsy of the uterine cervix and endometrial smear were performed.
Carcinoma in situ was found in the cervical polyp, Extended hysterectomy with bilateral adnectomy was performed on December 19, 1989. Histological examination of the removed uterus did not reveal residual malignant tumor. It was confirmed that the malignant change was localized in the cervical polyp.
From this case, it can be seen that all cervical polyp should be promptly removed and must undergo histological examination.
