Abstract
We retrospectively reviewed medical records to evaluate predictors of hypocalcemia after surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism. Fourteen patients with a diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism underwent parathyroidectomy at our institution from 2003 to 2013.
These patients were divided into two groups: the hypocalcemia group who showed hypocalcemia (Ca<8.5 mg/dl on postoperative day 4 or later) (n=4) and the normal group, who did not show hypocalcemia (n=10). Among the several parameters we examined, preoperative alkaline phosphatase (ALP) only turned out to be significantly higher in the hypocalcemia group than in the normal group.
