Abstract
(1) The leaves of typical male and typical female plants of spinach and asparagus were analyzed at the time they were beginning to flower. Determinations were made of the total ascorbic acid, provitamin A, reducing sugars, non-reducing sugars, total nitrogen, and chlorophyll.
2) Pistillate plants have higher average percentage of total ascorbic acid, β-carotene, reducing sugars, total nitrogen, and chlorophyll than staminate plants under the conditions of these experiments.
3) Concentrations of α-carotene, cryptoxanthin, and total sugars are almost equal in the staminate and pistillate plants, but the non-reducing sugars are much more abundant in the staminate plants than in the pistillate plants.
