The present paper deals with the inheritance of the round and the long shapes of fruits in the eggplant. Four varieties were used; Aonasu and Oserikawa, as round parent, Buko-haku and Hakata-naga, as long parent. Shape index was determined by dividing length by width.
The F1 was approximately intermediate in shape, but nearer to the round parent. Consequently, the round shape is incomplete dominant over the long. The F2 distribution showed nearly a skew curve. It seems probable that the difference in shape of fruits in the two parental races is due to at least three or more partially dominant factors, each of which differs in their effects. Just how these factors operate can not be well determined at present.
