Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the issues for activating international industry-academia collaboration activities in Japan and to present their countermeasures. In this report, based on the current Japanese situation of international industry-academia collaboration, past examples of Hiroshima University were cited as a typical case and analyzed comprehensively. For the analysis, we tried to verify our findings by referring to the result of interviews with stakeholders of the University of Cambridge in the UK, which is said to have developed an innovation ecosystem, and a report by Professor Ann Dowling of the university regarding the strengthening of industry-academia collaboration for the British government wherever appropriate. During this analysis, successful examples based on individual-to-individual relationships with existing mutual trust have been found. On the other hand, successful cases of organization-to-organization such as university vs. company were found to have conducted constant follow-up after events such as seminars. It was also found that a sense of trust was built up through the activities. In order to foster international industry-academia activities in the future, it has been shown important to carry out this constant follow-up and build a sense of trust, and its realization remains to be an issue.
