An outline on the ultrasonic turning is described. In this report, Aluminum is machined by the ultrasonically vibrating bite (frequency 18.4kc, amplitude 5μ) brazed to the horn of the ultrasonic machine.
The results are as follows;
(1) It has been found that when the vibration is given in the perpendicular direction to the lathe bed, ultrasonic turning yields good results without the damage of the bite and other troubles.
(2) At the higher cutting speed, we have also obtained a very smooth surface, owing to the small cutting force without having no built-up edge.
(3) This method will be suitable for cutting long, slender and ductile metals easily deformable for the cutting resistance.
