The purpose of this investigation was to examine the factors affecting expansion and shrinkage during sintering of Copper-Metal Compacts. X-ray microanalyzer was used to measure characteristic X-ray emanated by Cu and added metals in the sintered compacts.
The results are as follows :
(1) Dimensional changes during sintering of these compacts differ depending on the sorts of the metal added. Cu-Al, Cu-Sn, Cu-Zn compact expand during sintering in which the considerable diffusion band is made. On the other hand, Cu-Pb, Cu-Ag compact shrinkage in which meglesible diffusion band is made.
(2) Within Cu-Al compact, Al penetrates into Cu as sintering proceeds, therefore the place which Al has taken becomes pore. The generation of pores and the beginning of expansion occur at the same temperature.
