In order to reduce the noise of machine, the method of the attenuation by an enclosure of the machine is usually adopted, which is easy to apply but costs fairly expensive. It is more efficient to reduce the noise if one takes some measures at the noise sources. Two different methods of the noise reduction are applied to a dot matrix printer, where the solenoid assembly is the dominant parts of the vibration excitation. One is to diminish the force of the collision of the dotting wire at the backstopper by decelerating the return motion of the wire, which reduces the noise about 3dB (A). The other is to isolate the vibration from solenoid assembly to headbody which has a large sound radiation surface. The vibration isolation effcct attributes to lowering the natural frequency of the spring-mass system under the prevailing frequency of the noise or vibration spectrum, and the result of reduction of total noise level by 6dB (A) is obtained.
