A new measuring method was investigated for temperature changing at short time in very small area. The sensing part is composed of infrared radiation pyrometer and optical fiber, in which the fiber accepts the infrared ray radiated from the object and transmits it to PbS cell. The characteristics of this pyrometer are as follows. The fiber can be entered into intricate part because of freely yielding and accept the infrared rays radiated from very small area. So, it is easy to measure the inside temperature of the object, by means of drilling a micro fine hole on it to insert fiber. Moreover, when the area of the object is much larger than that of the core of fiber, the sensitivity of this pyrometer is independent of the distance between the acceptance face of fiber and the object. As a practical application of this new method, the peak temperature distribution in grinding workpiece was measured, and compared with the results using thermocouple method. Since the response of this pyrometer is about 25 times faster than that of thermocouple, the higher temperature was measured.
