The spring is composed of a few arc spring strips and wire, belt or link as a string which is tightened between both ends of the outest strip. The characteristic is essentially a non-linear hardening spring with unsymmetry, increases rapidly stiffness in compression side. This study theoretically deals with non-linear characteristics of the two laminated type with friction due to slip at loose ends of the inner arc strip, including the case of fixed ends, and describes design method for desired spring. String tension increases basic stiffness. The minimum basic stiffness is presented at two arc angles of the outer strip. Arc angle of the inner strip is effective for the increase of non-linearity. Merits of the bow springs are as follows; (1) good balance for dynamic use. (2) small mass at a string terminal, (3) long displacement range, (4) usable range of tension and compression sides, (5) easy setting of variable non-linearity by adjustment of the tension. There are many derivative ones for stronger transverse rigidity of the string terminal, application for a penetrative shaft, extreme unsymmetry and non-linearity, etc. They can be applied effectively for suspension of a hammer in hammering machines, cushion and guide of mechanisms.
