Abstract
In this paper, relying on R. Stichweh, who develops a theory of sport from the perspective of N.Luhmann’s social systems theory, we consider the social domain of sport as an ellipse with a dual focus (“competition system”and “public system”) and the complex relationship between sport and risk from the perspective of risk-risk trade-offs and selection (or non-selection) of risks. The strong link between sport and capitalism tends to impose negative risks on the ‘competition’ side by focusing on the ‘excitement’ on the ‘public’ side. However, from the perspective of viewing the choice of risk as one of the “risk conundrums”, the risk-risk trade-off assumes, in the first place, various conditions for the choice or non-selection of risks. Therefore, attention must be paid to the various factors on which the selection or non-selection of risks is premised. Rather than analysing some specific cases, this paper considers one theoretical framework for thinking sociologically about the complex relationship between sport and risks.
