The formation of an insoluble fibrin network plays an important role in the process of wound healing.
We immobilized thrombin and factor XIII (fibrin stabilizing factor) on absorbable gelatin sponge and on suture materials using our newly devised technique, for the purpose of enhancing a local accumulation of fibrin.
The immobilized materials were incubated in normal human plasma to study the degree of fibrin formation. They were also incubated in the tissue liquid from apatient with ovarial carcinoma. The fibrin formed in vitro was observed both macroscopically and histologically. The immobilized sponges were implanted in the rats' livers and omenta to evaluate the local formation of fibrin.
The fibrin clots formed in vitro on the immobilized materials were remarkable. The histological findings both in vitro and in vivo showed that a large amount of fibrin networks had developed homogenously in all parts of the carriers, while no fibrin formed on the control materials.
These results suggest that our newly devised materials will strongly promote healing of surgical wounds. Continuous studies are now being conducted.
