The purpose of this study is to develop the scale of Vividness of Mental Imagery Scale for Soccer Athletes and to investigate the relationship between other cognitive strategic variables (Controllability of Imagery, Decision Making and Judgment Abilities) and Vividness of Mental Imagery. On the first research, the subjects were 254 male soccer athletes (229 high school students, 21 college students and 4 others) in Tokyo or Kanagawa. All subjects practiced soccer regularly in their club teams. The mean age of the subjects were 16.87 (SD=1.57). The subjects were asked to answer questionnaires that composed of a face sheet and 40 items during club activities from March 1 to 8, 2006. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted to develop the Vividness of Mental Imagery Scale for Soccer Athletes. The result of exploratory factor analysis identified two factor solutions with 20 items. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated the structure of this scale had acceptable statistical requirements (GFI=.904, AGFI=.873, CFI=.947, RMSEA=.056). On the second research, 106 male soccer athletes (87 high school students, 19 college students ; mean age=17.15, SD=1.52) participated in the experiment that are conducted from March 20 to April 5, 2006. Subjects were asked to complete a questionnaire (the Vividness of Mental Imagery for Soccer Athletes) and choose the most acceptable response to various situations of a soccer game shown on the screen to evaluate cognitive strategies (Controllability of Imagery, Decision Making and Judgment Abilities). Multiple regression analysis and simple regression analysis were conducted to examine the correlations between Vividness of Mental Imagery and other cognitive strategic variables. The significant correlations were found between Controllability of Imagery and Decision Making and Judgment Abilities, but not between Vividness of Mental Imagery and other cognitive strategic variables. These research results showed that mental controllability training for soccer athletes is effective to enhance their Decision Making and Judgment Abilities.
