The purpose of this research was to clarify the psychological modification of university students who participated in the structural camping activities that intended to build close human relationships by facilitating communication and interaction among participants. To assess the modification, Collective Self-efficacy Scale, Interpersonal Perception Scale and Intrapersonal Perception Scale were developed on the first research. The subjects were 117 Obirin University students (male=58, female=59 ; mean age=20.05, SD=3.85). The subjects were asked to answer a questionnaire during lecture periods on July 22 and 23, 2005. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted to develop psychological measurements. The results showed that Collective Self-efficacy Scale identified a four-factor solution with 12 items, Interpersonal Perception Scale a three-factor solution with 12 items and Intrapersonal Perception Scale a three-factor solution with 9 items. Each of the scales had acceptable statistical requirements of internal consistency and structural validities. To evaluate the effects of structural camping activities, 42 university students (male=19, female=23) participated in the entire camping program that consisted of four-day sessions from September 7 to September 10, 2005. The subjects were divided into two groups : experimental group with structural camping activities and control group without structural camping activities. Both groups were asked to answer questionnaires twice at the beginning and at the end of the camping program (Experimental group : September 7 and 10, Control group : September 23 and October 3). Two-way Repeated measures ANOVA was conducted to examine the effects of structural camping activities. The differences in several psychological modifications were found between the statistical data of the experimental group and those of the control group. Increased activeness and sociality and decreased mental stress of the experimental group were statistically significant, indicating that the mental health of the subjects in the experimental group improved after their participation in the structural camping activities. The implication of this research is that structural camping activities can contribute to improved mental health by providing social skill training and social support resources.
