This paper aims to show the importance of teaching emotional expressions in Japanese systematic language learning. We examined the numerical occurrence and the type of emotional expressions that appeared in Japanese textbooks. We also made a survey of overseas university students to discover their actual usage of emotional expressions in daily conversation. Based on these surveys, it was found that there were differences between the emotional expressions displayed in textbooks and those actually used by students in conversational situations.
