In recent years, in response to the needs of learners, various forms of Japanese language short programs have been developed. In this study, from a discourse skills perspective, analysis was conducted of how the oral abilities of Japanese learners changed following completion of an interactive Japanese language program. The research method was based on Nakai et al.'s (2004) discourse skills categories. Upon the completion of a two-week interactive program in which learners interacted with native Japanese speakers, beginner learners used a range of different skills to handle communication problems; intermediate and advanced learners used laughter and humor skills to communicate more effectively.
