    In this research, I propose a strategy for Japanese language education in a company based on an example of Japanese language training in a fast food company where I work. This company had newly conducted training specialized for Japanese language acquisition only for foreign employees. As a result, the Japanese language skills of foreign employees were improved. In addition, When considering the content and format of the teaching materials and training, I suggests following; complete the content in one class, treat something that matches work and actual experiences as teaching materials, and finally introduce a more versatile vocabulary.

    In this study, four advanced Japanese learners from Taiwan wrote essays according to set reading materials; and the ways in which they perceived the significances of the materials were investigated. After reading two letters addressed to the editor (LTE) with opposing viewpoints, the leaners were requested to write an essay based on the reading materials. They were then interviewed for the reasons behind the ideas they extracted from the reading materials. An analysis of the interview results and the essays written by the learners has been performed for reviewing the pedagogy of reading and writing comprehension.

    When non-native Japanese (NNJ) speakers work in Japan, sometimes misunderstanding occurs in communication with native Japanese (NJ) speakers. There are even situations where both NNJ speakers and NJ speakers are confused. Both parties need smooth communication to help each other and to work in cooperation with each other. For that reason, it is important not only for NNJ speakers to adapt to the Japanese workplace and to Japanese society but also for NJ speakers to compromise with NNJ speakers. An analysis and careful consideration of the results were carried out through a questionnaire survey on the kinds of problems that are present in actual situations. Finally, I make suggestions on what we should do to achieve smooth communication between NJ speakers and NNJ speakers.

    This study is a quantitative examination of how interspersing a composition task between two speaking tasks with identical topics will affect content and quantity of the speech produced in the second speaking task. It demonstrates that performing such a writing task increases both the breadth of vocabulary produced and the level of abstraction in the second speaking task. The results suggest that a combination of writing and speaking tasks can lead to an increase in the overall competence on language production.

    In this study, I focused on one intermediate learner. While she understood the "importance" of learning keigo, she was acutely aware of the "difficulty," as keigo changes, depending upon the person one addresses. She concluded, "I don't want to acquire keigo perfectly." I examined what led her to this determination. Reviewing her successes and failures, I analyzed her attitude toward keigo in a qualitative manner. The value and meaning of learning keigo cannot be measured by how high the goal, yet encouraging learners to set goals for learning keigo that fit their self-image toward relationships with other people, is important.

    In this paper, we report teaching demonstrations by students in the Japanese language teacher training course of our university. In this class, teaching demonstrations were given in workshop-style. In most of the cases, students gave teaching demonstrations in front of the rest of class as part of the teacher training course. However, in this class, the students worked together in small groups. They learned how to teach Japanese exceedingly from watching the performance of the other students closely and sharing their reflection.

    In this study, we examined mispronunciations of Japanese sokuon (geminate consonants) by Chinese-speaking learners of Japanese using the corpus named I-JAS, which is made by the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics. Two patterns of mispronunciations of sokuon were observed: (1) dropping of sokuon (pikunikku < pikuniku) and (2) replacement of sokuon with long vowels or moraic nasals (basuketto < basukeeto, sandoitchi < sandoinchi). The information on the J-CAT test scores is given in I-JAS and the learners of the Pre-Advanced level also make such mispronunciations of sokuon. Therefore, we highlight the necessity of the careful instruction of sokuon.

    Recently, business communication is often handled through email exchange, however, phone calls still play an important role, especially where delicate situations with clients are involved. From the currently available business Japanese textbooks, the authors picked up chapters on "complaints" featuring phone call exchanges on sensitive topics and investigated the characteristics of these exchanges. Research results show that these textbooks focus attention on additional salient information regarding complaints and provide realistic model conversations of people handling complaints in order to increase overall learner understanding of this topic. This material provides learners with a natural conversational flow that reflects actual business settings.

    After one year of participating in a conversation partner program with international students, a Japanese student changed her communication strategies to solve misunderstandings. This paper presents the results of an interview conducted one year after the first encounter with analysis based on factors found within the concept of global human resources. The factors include 1. Linguistic/communication skills: 2. Self-direction/positiveness, a spirit for challenge, cooperation/ flexibility, a sense of responsibility/mission; and 3. Understanding of other cultures/a sense of Japanese identity. In the interview, the Japanese student revealed the changes that she made in all of these areas.

    The YOKOHAMA KANAGAWA International Student Career Development Program is a commissioned project by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), which Yokohama National University operates in collaboration with Yokohama City University, the City of Yokohama, and Kanagawa prefecture. The program consists of three pillars: career education, education for business Japanese, and internships. The entire program cooperates with numerous heterogenous organizations for employment support for international students, and this also applies with business Japanese. This presentation reports on cooperation in the project's business Japanese education with numerous heterogenous organizations, such as Japanese language schools, nonprofit organizations, and corporations.

    This is a study into the Flipped Classroom method and the use of electronic contents in Moodle and Google Classroom by Thai Japanese learners aiming to become Japanese human resources after graduation in "Japan Affairs". Through post-class interviews regarding e-learning with Thai Japanese language learners, focusing specifically on Moodle and Google Classroom, it became apparent that the fact that they primarily accessed them using their smartphones meant that they had the impression that usability was emphasized at the cost of the contents. As such methods as to how to introduce Moodle and Google Classroom to sustain the enthusiasm for learning in "Japan Affairs" are discussed.

    We use the integrated textbook, "Chuukyuu o Manaboo," and offer an 8 hours a week class to intermediate learners including research and graduate students, and exchange students. Though we had focused on grammar and vocabulary in the past, we reformed the syllabus this year in reference to CEFR and CLIL. In each lesson, we have incorporated authentic materials related to each theme, and shared goals with the learners so that they can give their opinions and understand the contents deeply. In this practical study, we will report the class design including goals, tasks, learning processes, questions, supplemental materials, and evaluation.

    The Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games are approaching. The Japanese language educational world is also focusing on the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, but the subsequent international events will also be important. For example, Osaka World Expo 2025, which has a six-month session period, World Masters Games 2021 Kansai and 2026 Asian Games (Aichi), where participants are expected to be 2.5 times as many as the Olympics, the Tokyo Marathon with approximately 6,000 foreign participants, etc. Taking into consideration the events after the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, I will think over Japanese language and Japanese language education with relation to the future international events with focus on sports.

    Learners in an upper intermediate level Japanese language class were assigned collaborative assessment activity to improve their speech performance. Creating assessment criteria about good speech for this class, the learners discussed about the perspective and the feature of quality of their speech, to assess their speech performance. After self-assessment and assessment by others using the assessment criteria, the learners reflect their speech, and attempt to improve their speech. While developing assessment criteria collaboratively, learners specify their perspective according to the need for speech improvement and verbalizing the criteria for understanding the speech performance.

    This research explores the ways in which students might learn to utilize linguistic forms in appropriate contexts. We conducted a survey on the usage of -teiru among native speakers, investigating how it is used in everyday conversation. Our results show -teiru has various functions, such as "a response when looking for people", "preliminary remarks before an invitation" and "a strategy for developing a conversation". It became clear, however, that these functions are not mentioned in most textbooks. Based on the results of our survey and textbook analysis, we elaborate on an appropriate application of Japanese teaching that helps students to better connect with Japanese society.

    Our research target is the preparatory mathematics education programs in Malaysia, whose students are supposed to enter science and engineering courses in Japanese universities. Students, attending at such preparatory schools in Malaysia, study mathematics simultaneously with the Japanese language, physics, and chemistry, at a higher level than that of their upper secondary education. There exist, unfortunately, lacks even after two years of preparation. In order to fill these gaps effectively during the preparation programs and to attain smooth articulation, authors will propose lists of important items in mathematics, comparing the math curriculums in upper secondary education between Malaysia and Japan.

    In general, accent teaching materials incorporate activities such as answering the drop of 4-beat nouns or the difference of accent in 2-beat words (e.g. "ame" (HL-LH)) during the beginning lessons. These types of activities are sometimes too difficult for learners, and also may give learners wrong impression that they have to memorize the accent of every single word. In this presentation, the author introduces accent teaching activity which utilizes Japanese surnames as a first lesson. After listening to the stimulation sounds, learners answered whether the accent dropped or not, and then two accent types of (0) and (-2) were introduced to them. Following the lesson, learners were asked to answer the accent type of other surnames. It was indicated that learners improved their ability to guess and make corrections in the accent types.

    In this research, I would like to take basic color adjectives in Japanese and clarify differences between foreign words and Japanese words that represent the same color. The following research question were set. When foreign color adjectives and Japanese color adjectives modify nouns, consider what features are seen in each noun. We consider that two color words tend to represent positive images or negative images when modifying an abstract. The method of study analyzes The Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese (BCCWJ) As a result, when color terms modify an abstract, they tend to produce negative images.

    So far, a lot of research has been done on the misuse of the Japanese verbs 'Give' and 'Receive' expressions, but few studies have been done on non-use. Therefore, in this study, Chinese learners of Japanese will be chosen and compared with native speakers of Japanese to clarify under what condition the omission of a translated version takes place. In Liang (2019), a survey was conducted to find out the usage of 'te-ageru'. In this research, we analyzed 'te-kureru' and 'te-morau' in the same way. The result of the survey showed that Chinese learners are generally lower than native speakers of Japanese in terms of usage rate of transfer expressions, and tend to use 'ru-form' or 'masu-form' instead of transfer expressions.

    This study reports the survey results and the pronunciation practice of Japanese pronunciation teaching in a 15-week intensive program for international students. According to the results, at the beginning of the course the main pronunciation mistakes by Cambodian students were as follows: "tsu" was replaced with "su", "sha" with "cha", "jyo" with "cho" and "su" was often used instead of "tsu" as found in last year's survey. The results from the teaching report and the final check indicate that pronunciation exercises with multinational classmates helped students to be conscious of their pronunciation and improve their pronunciation.

    This study analyzes discussions from the perspective of deepening a discussion and building upon ideas. The subjects were (advanced level) first year foreign students. In this practice, a variety of expressions were used to facilitate a productive discussion such as expressing an opinion, making objections, and prompting an opinion. For this study, the textbook objectives were evaluated on seven factors while analyzing the flow of discussion from the video and transcript. One of the results is that it was an important action for members to confirm each others stance to build upon ideas. For the enhancement of a discussion it is difficult to understand the appropriate flow from meta instructions and practice phrases alone. This suggests the need to provide both the process and the conclusions for this exercise.

    Some of the most frequently occurring Japanese compound verbs, "-komu", "-ageru/agaru" and "-dasu", are characterized by semantic expansion from motion to change of state and aspectual meanings. While compound verbs exist in Vietnamese, their structure differs from Japanese compound verbs and thus acquisition of the latter is difficult for native speakers of Vietnamese. Learners are unable to understand the meaning of compound verbs in reading tasks and avoid their use in productive tasks. This presentation compares compound verbs in Japanese and Vietnamese expressing motion and change of state, and makes pedagogical suggestions concerning Japanese compound verbs.

    In academic writing, questions are answered logically with objective reasoning. However, with essays, with the great variety in structure and jumps in development, the author's main point and reasoning can be more difficult to understand. Three Japanese language students with high reading comprehension skills were asked to read an essay using the read and think aloud method and to write a summary of it. As a result, as the students read, they were able to identify the difficult sections and inconsistencies of the text and then corrected them their summaries, suggesting that if they accepted the main premise, the inconsistences and jumps were admissible.

    This study reports on an investigation into Japanese learners' pragmatic perceptions and difficulties in performing speech acts. Survey results suggest some universality in the use of polite expressions in learners' first and second languages. It also found that the learners were aware of culture-specificity in the high frequency, variety, and functions of pragmatic formulas and hedging expressions in Japanese. Consequently, there were some difficulties in the comprehension and production of pragmatic speech acts for learners due to these inter-lingual differences. These results support the notion that pragmatic competence should be covered in Japanese classes.

    This study examines discussion characteristics that exert a positive influence on conversation in Question Formula Technique activities. In a pre-advanced Japanese course, a recorded discussion was analyzed. Four factors of successful communication outlined by FitzGerald(2010) were identified during the group session in which questioning technique was improved through discussion: 1) a willingness to shift positions or appreciate other's point of view, 2) a high level of interactivity and inclusivity, 3) participants taking a facilitating role, and 4) humor. The results indicate that discussion skills play vital roles in this activity.

    In this study we conduct an experimental writing course for peer response activities by 22 Chinese undergraduate students in Department of Japanese. Through analyzing the feedbacks written on the worksheets, the impacts of the use of L1 and L2 are investigated from two perspectives, including the quantity, the content, and the type of the feedbacks themselves, and the relationships between the feedbacks and the actual revisions. The results show that the use of L1 in peer responses not only facilitates the feedback contents in sufficient detail, but also improves the adoption of peer feedbacks, which greatly contributes to the revision process.

    This research conducted semi-structured interviews with three Japanese language instructors, aiming at clarifying teachers' personalities, which help them create positive relationships with other instructors. The collected data was analysed with KJ method. Analysed data showed that there were six points to the teachers' personalities, and it was also suggested that a teacher's ability to create and maintain positive relationships with other teachers is determined by these six points. The six points are: 1. sense of rivalry, 2. receptivity to different values, 3. activeness to communicate with other teachers, 4. ability to control your own emotion, 5. tendency to criticise others and 6. consideration of how to express emotions.

    'Face' means a lot to both Chinese and Japanese people. According to Sueda's paper (1993), Chinese people pay more attention to financial capacity than Japanese people do. But Zan's 'face' survey(2019) finds Chinese people aged around 20 years old tending to be indifferent to their financial capacities. As time goes by, it's likely for young generation in China to change their thoughts. Therefore, it is essential for a further investigation. This article investigates the perspectives of Chinese young generation aged 20 to 40 on personal financial capacity and 'face' through questionnaires.

    This report describes writing instruction in a second language teaching method course for graduate students. During the semester, students submitted several writing assignments related to language education. At the end of the semester, they wrote a book review of language teaching materials. An analysis of the book reviews submitted by two Chinese students revealed that their writing had improved in various aspects such as text organization and mechanics of citation. Nevertheless, difficulties remained in the areas of selecting references and using quotations.

    Classes on grammar, reading, listening, writing, composition, speaking, and about Japan are held at the Nagoya Campus of the Institute of the Japanese Language. In the classes, students are encouraged to acquire autonomous study habits and practice learning in a manner that allows them to approach classes independently. The objective is for students to develop the ability to study independently and engage in problem-solving activities during their higher education. Each class was developed to promote active studies so that learners could proactively advance their learning. Teaching materials used in the Grammar class were used voluntarily in other classes. This presentation reports on this advancement from the perspective of autonomous study, using the Grammar class as an example.

    When teaching composition, it is important not just to point out mistakes, but also to understand each student's pattern of errors as well as those common among the entire class. Co-Chu, the corpus analysis system being developed by the authors, lets researchers analyze data they have collected and allows metadata tagging not only at the word level, but also the sentence level. We investigated the use of this feature to analyze data collected from Japanese language learners' compositions. In this experiment, we focused on the use of transitive and intransitive verbs, tagging them at the word level, and attached metadata as comments to accompanying words such as particles and auxiliary verbs. As a result, we were able to use Co-Chu's search feature to create a summary of how both individuals and the entire class used transitive and intransitive verbs.

    Communication through social networking services (SNS) is a daily occurrence; therefore, Japanese language learners wish to communicate on SNS. This requires the learner to focus on different areas such as style. In the context of Japanese language education, style is classified as either polite or plain. However, to communicate in the type of casual Japanese used on SNS, the concept of plain style taught to students does not provide sufficient consideration to register, and its use can result in a tone that is misaligned with the speaker's personality. Regarding this phenomenon, we examined significant arguments by presenting real-life examples.

    In recent years, in response to the needs of learners, various forms of Japanese language short programs have been developed. In this study, from a discourse skills perspective, analysis was conducted of how the oral abilities of Japanese learners changed following completion of an interactive Japanese language program. The research method was based on Nakai et al.'s (2004) discourse skills categories. Upon the completion of a two-week interactive program in which learners interacted with native Japanese speakers, beginner learners used a range of different skills to handle communication problems; intermediate and advanced learners used laughter and humor skills to communicate more effectively.

    For international students seeking employment, the job placement test is a major hurdle. One type of question checking non-verbal proficiency question were designed to measure Japanese reading comprehension and so foreign students find them very difficult. The question is whether the problem lies in their reading comprehension or math ability. As a first step to check this, author propose to a test survey of Chinese students using a translation of the original Japanese version of the mathematical questions. Then, we will verify whether the difficulty of the problems is the same in both languages, and whether the order in which the problems are presented has an order effect.

    The primary objective of this thesis is to explore the relationship between the sound symbolisms of vowels through considering the phonological aspect of the "Laugher" onomatopoeia in Japanese and Chinese. The sentences were collected from the Japanese and Chinese corpora. Based on the corpora data, Japanese and Chinese share similar structures and pronunciation for the onomatopoeia of laughter, In Japanese, the voiced versions tend to describe a male laughter while the vowels /o/ and/u/ can be used to express a peal of refined feminine laughter, whereas Chinese prefer to use the vowels /i/ and /o/.

    Recently, extensive reading (ER) sessions in Japanese have been widely conducted by asking learners to follow four fundamental rules: 1) start with easy books, 2) read without using a dictionary, 3) skip the words you do not understand, and 4) try a different book if you feel that the current one is too difficult or boring. Using a questionnaire, this study aims to understand supporters’, such as teachers, perceptions of these rules. Based on the analysis, the author discusses not only the rules from the perspective of the supporters but also the pedagogical implications of supporting ER.

    This study introduces the applications "mic-J N5" and "mic-J N4" to learn basic Japanese. These apps run on smartphones and other mobile devices, and consists of "conversations" with audio date, "new vocabulary," "grammatical notes" with English translation, as well as five types of "practices:" 1) multiple choice; 2) drag-and-drop; 3) word/sentence arranging; 4) speech recognition; and 5) keyboard typing. Through these exercises, learners can self-check their understanding and retention of learning. Any ideas, comments and collaborators are welcome to continue developing and updating these practices and apps.

    This paper reports about the activity of The Question Formula Technique(QFT), based on Rothstein & Santana (2015), for the Japanese studies students, to make use of it for the preparation of their course dissertations. Various studies have shown that how to formulate a research question when writing papers or research plans, but in many cases, it is assumed to work alone. From the viewpoint of formulating the research question, this paper compares some studies to formulate the research question and the method of QFT and reports how the process of creating various questions by multiple people affected the questions in the thesis.

    In this study, the pronunciation training that a speech therapist performs for a native speaker was adapted to non-native speakers. After being administered a pre-questionnaire survey, five Burmese speakers gave interviews and participated in group training. A post-questionnaire survey revealed the participants were satisfied with their training and found that their pronunciation had improved. Although the number of training sessions conducted were not sufficient to produce natural sounds and correct pronunciations during conversations, it has been shown that this training method can be implemented for non-native speakers.
