The environment in which foreign technical intern trainees learn Japanese varies greatly. There are many who live in areas where there are no Japanese language classes, or access to such classes is difficult. In order to create opportunities to learn Japanese, the Ehime Prefectural International Center and Ehime University collaborated to offer remote (synchronous) elementary Japanese language classes. Such online support for regional Japanese language education is expected to increase in the future. The issues involved in maintaining and expanding synchronous online beginner-level classes in local Japanese language education is discussed, focusing on the learning environment of these trainees.
