Abstract
This study follows the changes in reading style and learning beliefs by an upper beginner level student attending the Japanese extensive reading class for one year. In the beginning of the course, the student followed a language-oriented learning style that emphasized the accumulation of grammar and vocabulary knowledge. After experiencing extensive reading by freely choosing what to read and reading a lot, the student began to enjoy the books’ content without worrying about unknown words. It could be closely observed how the student’s self-esteem grew and how the learning beliefs changed.
