This paper reports the translation project using literary works in an advanced Japanese language course. In the first step, learners gain fundamental knowledge of what is lost in translation based on eight points that Makino (2018) suggested. The second step is to observe how the Japanese and English languages are different by comparing two picture books written in each language. The third step is to translate one page of a novel and explain how the learners utilized the eight points they learned in the first step. Finally, this paper also considers the possibility that the points Makino suggested will also be utilized in teaching academic writing.
