This article reports the result of a preliminary research on how specified skilled workers acquire JSL in both qualitative and quantitative method. These workers have potential to become permanent residents in Japan in future under the new migration control law implemented in 2018. For them to live in Japan well both materially and spiritually, it is apparently necessary to overcome the language and culture barriers. Research is conducted on them to estimate their JSL competency using JOPT-C. Also, survey is to be conducted on their living situation with special attention to their social networking to reveal the relation between JSL acquisition and socialization.
