This study explores the use of visual novels in Japanese language learning. Based on a survey conducted on language learners on the use of digital games in foreign language learning, four learners of Japanese from Taiwan, when playing the visual novel Kanna Maze, were provided with vocabulary lists and translations of the game texts. Feedback indicated that vocabulary lists were more helpful than translations and frequent word repetition aided memorization, but participants became accustomed to reading, this experience did not help them to study for JLPT.
