In this presentation, we underscore the importance of providing conceptual and concrete instructions for explaining figures and tables in reports. We also effectively demonstrate both good and poor examples to learners. Existing instructional materials offer brief model paragraphs and sentence patterns used in explaining and interpreting figures and tables. However, merely presenting model paragraphs and structures fails to convey to learners the necessity and techniques of integrating figures and tables into their reports. As a result of our instructions above focusing on the integration, learners became more attentive to the critical points when explaining figures and tables in their reports.
