A Pilot Study on Creating a Japanese Language Textbook for International Student Athletes with Generative AI

Abstract

This study examines the feasibility of creating a Japanese language textbook for international student athletes using generative AI. As a pilot case, ChatGPT was used to rewrite Situational Functional Japanese by incorporating basketball-related vocabulary and communication scenes. The generated materials were evaluated by Japanese language teachers. The results suggest that generative AI can efficiently produce sport-oriented teaching materials while preserving textbook structure. At the same time, issues were identified in grammatical accuracy and exercise design, indicating the need for careful prompt design and human revision in future textbook development.
