Abstract
This paper reports on an experiment conducted at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies (IUC) aimed at increasing learners’ speaking time outside the classroom through the use of an app. A reading-aloud app was introduced in 2023 and its effectiveness was evaluated through questionnaire and interview surveys. The results indicate that the app was found to be effective; as a result, the program was expanded and greater attention was given to pronunciation instruction. The experiment suggests that, even given limited class time, it is possible to provide continuous support for curriculum-linked autonomous learning in listening and speaking.
