Abstract

Recently, the decline in Japan’s working-age population has become an issue, and human resources are becoming increasingly important for the survival of companies. The shortage of human resources, especially in small and medium enterprises, is a serious business challenge. Retention management is attracting attention as a solution to this problem. In this study, we focus on turnover due to health, which is an unwilling factor for both companies and employees, as a cause of turnover that should be approached by small- and medium-sized companies. We hypothesize that “health management” is an effective strategy to retain employees who leave their jobs for health reasons. We conducted a questionnaire survey of employees who had left their jobs and those who had never left their jobs, focusing on the differences in the perception of health management between large companies and small and medium-sized companies. Based on the results, we showed that health management is effective for human resource retention, and proposed appropriate approaches to health management by discussing specific approaches to health management that are effective for human resource retention.
