Abstract

The author developed a system for determining appropriate pacing of drills during simultaneous classroom instruction. It uses a response analyzer to measure and a computer to process student progress in real time and based upon pre-determined criteria. This provides the teacher with continuously updated information which is useful in determining classroom pacing : e.g., the providing of hints and knowledge of results, stopping the drills momentarily, giving reviews and so on. Computer processing is done in Prolog on a mainframe computer. Basically an expert system, the program uses about 250 rules developed by an experienced teacher for pacing classroom instruction to analyze the specific data and response curves received from the response analyzer.
