Painting is an indispensable work to prevent a hull from corrosion and keep the fine appearance. To carry out the effective and safe work the roles of a work manager are important as well as painting skills of a crew member. In this paper, knowledge and skills required for the painting of onboard maintenance are specified in the course of investigation of them the manager must acquire; the authors propose the standards of the knowledge and skills, which are obtained by literature surveys and examining characteristic onboard works to be related.
The obtained results are arranged in a table, which shows the relation between the above-mentioned knowledge and skills and requirements of STCW Code Section A-II/5. The table is expected to be used as a fundamental data to investigate whether the painting plan made by a boatswain is appropriate because seafarer’s skill levels can be understood.
