For enhancing microbial degradation of cdlulosic materials, a xylamse gene cloned from Clastridiwn stervoraruan was integxated and expt ssed in ace callus by the Agrobactthwn infection method. The traansgenic dce plant was feitilizednocmally when the enzyme was not secmbedfromthe cells. The leaves and grains of the traagthc rice plant zevealed xylamse activity remarimbly. The hansgenic leaves dipped into the n menfluidinthe goat nzmenthroughfistula were digestedeasily znone thanthat of axon-traasfonnant. Chitin, main component of the recalcitrant marine biomass like shrimp shell was converted to hydrogen gas by Clostridium paraputificum M-21. For the effective production of hydrogen gas from chitin by the orb, hydrogemse gene encoding essential enzyme to release hydrogen from H2-fermdoxin was introduced into M-21 cells by electropozation method, The transformant expressing hydrogenase gene produced hydrogen gas 1.8 fold higher than the wild one.
