Hydrodynamics and mass transfer in internal flow airlift reactor have been studied in this work in order to optimizate the production of the intracellular bioplastic poly(β-hydroxybutiric acid) (PHB) from a batch cuture of Burkholderia sacchari IPT 189. A central composite experimental design was used to get the best variables arrangement for the process. The variables studied were superficial liquid velocity, type and height sparguer. The optimal superficial liquid velocity for the growth and PHB synthesis was 1.48 m/s, riser diameter was 80mm and over the 97.5-195 Umin range, the effect of flow rate is negligible. The type and height sparguer were almost negligible.
