Chemical Texturing using anodic oxide films of aluminum was proposed as an alternative to the conventional mechanical texturing. It can control the micro surface structure of rigid disk substrates and lower the head flying height. CoNiCr/Cr longitudinal magnetic layers on the CTX substrates showed sufficient magnetic and tribological properties. CoCr perpendicular magnetic layers can be formed on the chemically textured substrates, and their surface structure is almost the same as that of longitudinal magnetic layers.
