The hygroscopic expansion of PET films with or without thin metal layer coatings was measured. It was demonstrated that the thin metal layers retarded the rate of deformation of PET films and decreased the dimensional change when they were exposed to moisture. The amount of this change was semi-quantitatively explained by use of a composite model. Diffusion coefficients of moisture in the PET film were obtained for several cases and compared each other. A very small amount of penetration of moisture through metal layers may have been present.
