The effect of domain structures of main-pole films on reproducing sensitivities were investigated for various single pole type perpendicular magnetic heads. The reproducing sensitivity of the heads made of a Co-Zr-Nb single layer becomes unstable and decreases with the increase of closure domain size when the track width narrows and the anisotropy field Hk decreases. On the other hand, when the wall of closure domains can be pinned by grooving at the only edge of a main-pole film, the magnetization rotates without any disturbance in main domains. Using this novel domain control method, closure domains become smaller even for smaller Hk, an d a stable and highly sensitive single-pole head can be obtained.
