Co/Pt multilayer films developed for magneto-optical recording are studied as perpendicular magnetic recording media. Recording characteristics of Co/Pt multilayer film deposited on a 3.5" magnetic disk substrate, are evaluated using a thin film ring head for recording and compared with those of a single layer Co-Cr-Ta perpendicular recording medium. The results of recording current characteristics and recording density rolloff performance show that the medium is suitable for perpendicular magnetic recording. The medium noise is, however, about two times as large as that of Co-Cr-Ta medium when a high density signal is recorded. Magnetization structure observation indicates that the medium noise is originating from the irregularities of magnetization transitions.
