Read/write characteristics of the composite media, consisting of perpendicular anisotropy top layer and longitudinal anisotropy underlayer, were investigated focused upon the effect of underlayer magnetization. It was found that the underlayer magnetization affected not only the output but also the mode of remanent magnetization. The reproduced voltage was enhanced well by using the medium with larger magnetization underlayer, whereas the recording density characteristics were better with the thinner underlayer medium. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the underlayer properties according to the recording density region of operation in order to realize excellent read/write characteristics.
