Soft X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism in 3d Transition-Metal Chalcogenides

We present a soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (SXMCD) study of the electronic and magnetic states of ferromagnetic CoS₂ and ferrimagnetic Fe₇S₈ and Fe₇Se₈. An application of the SXMCD spin and orbital sum rules to the Co L_{2, 3} and Fe L_{2, 3} SXMCD spectra gives reliable individual spin and orbital magnetic moments. We argue the electronic structure of these compounds and propose new pictures for the spin-polarized density of states on the basis of the experimentally determined magnetic moments.
