Occupational disorders similar to the Neck-Shoulder-Arm Syndrome have been frequently noticed since about 1955 among business machine operators who appeared with the progress of technical innovation in business work. But recently, some reports were made that the disorders were also noticed among copying-slips writers who used ball-point pens. Therefore, it was considered important to make clear what the load at copying-slips writing was in order to examine the relation between the disorder and the work.
In this study, the load at writing imposed upon muscles of hand, forearm and shoulder was surface-electromyographically investigated in female subjects in relation to the type of pens and the number of copies written at a time. Lead positions of EMG were as follows :
(A) the part of 2nd Dorsal Interosseous in the back of the right hand,
(B) the part of Extensor Digitorum of the right forearm extensors,
(C) the part of Flexor Carpi Ulnalis of the right forearm flexors,
(D) the upper part of the right Trapezius.
As a result of the experiments, the following facts were made clear :
1) In writing on the copying-slips with a ball-point pen at various pressures, the more the number of papers clearly copied at a time, the larger the loads imposed upon (A), (B) and (C), but thd load imposed upon (D) did not show such a tendency.
2) When the number of papers was more than 3 or 4, loads imposed upon (A), (B) and (C) were larger than those in writing only one copy.
3) Loads imposed upon (A), (B) and (C) in writing only one copy with a ball-point pen were larger than those with a thin point marker.
