It was previously reported that rejoining of radiation-induced chromosome breaks was inhibited by benzene in vitro. Benzene is known to be metabolized quickly in the tissue into some of phenols, among which phenol is the most predominant metabolite. In the present study, therefore, phenol was tested on its inhibitory effect on rejoining of radiation-induced chromosome breaks in cultured human leukocytes by the use of dosage fractionation method.
