The system was developed for the purpose of easily operation and manipulation not by information specialists but by laymen. Video tape and film stocks are only identified by use of reproducers so that abstracts which describe the content of them in the form of Kanji and Kana need to be included in the search result output. Since free keywords are used, a searcher can handle any words which he gets into his head when he constructs searching formula. Inputting them on Kana keyboard arranged in the order of the Japanese syllabary allows anybody to handle the system easily. The system has been practically operated for almost these three years. As the data size has increased, the system has been used as retrieval system of general information. It uses Kanji version STAIRS of IBM as retrieval package.
