Abstract
The Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists (JSPP) was established in 1959 with 208 members and the first issue of Plant and Cell Physiology (PCP) was published later that same year. The aim of the JSPP was to become a partner to the International Association of Plant Physiologists that had been set up by USA, France, India, and other countries in 1954, as well as to create a forum for the exchange of research information amongst plant physiologists working in different research areas, such as those affiliated to University Departments within Science, Agriculture, and Pharmacology Faculties. Since its inception, the JSPP and its membership has grown to approximately 2,400 members, with each member receiving a monthly issue of PCP. PCP is well recognized within the international community (currently in the top 7 % of international plant science journals) and achieved its highest impact factor to date of 4.702 in 2011. The major activities of the JSPP are to organize the annual scientific meeting, support its members, and to promote and publish high quality research in its journal, PCP.
