This paper discusses an issue of language that is typical in the dissemination of published scientific research in Japan by presenting underlying data. We matched domestic and international literature databases to analyze the number of STM papers from Japan's universities in the light of languages used. The results show that Japanese academic researchers tend to use English in their original papers and Japanese in their interpretive literature, short notes and conference papers and further that English papers show little growth in the number during the past decade. It became clear that the total number of English papers from academics currently fails to reflect the values universities place on publishing research output in English.
