1) Nasr al-Din Khodja (Nasreddin Hoca) is the hero of the stories of wit and stupidity among the Turkish people, who bears a strong resemblance to the German Till Eulenspiegel, the English Joe Miller, the Japanese Ikkyu-Zenji and Kicchomno, etc. The present writer has published two papers (“Nasreddin Hoca” and “Hoca and Timur”), in which he has introduced various opinions current about life and his srories to the Japanese learned circles.
2) The present paper is continued from the papers above mentioned. In this paper, the present writer points out that we can get knowledge about the everyday life of the Turkish people from the stories of Nasreddin Hoca, and translates about twenty stories from the Turkish versions of Ercümed Ekrem Talu, Mehmet Ali Aksöy and Abdülbaki Gölpinarli.
3) The present writer has translated about five hundred stories of Nasreddin Hoca from Turkish into Japanese and intends to publish them in the near future. If realized, it will be the first complete translation of the “Nasreddin Hoca Hikâyeleri (Stories)” in Japan.
