Abstract
A fungus was isolated which produced xylan-degrading enzymes effective for the synthesis of alkyl β-xylosides from xylan and alcohols in a single step operation. Xylan (10 g) and 1-heptanol (150 mL) were added to culture broth (350 mL) of the isolated Penicillium sp. 9203, and the reaction mixture was chromatographed on a activated carbon column. The succesive elutions were done with 20% and 30% (vol/vol) 1-propanol solution. Crystal of heptyl β-xyloside (0.8 g) was obtained from the 30% (vol/vol) 1-propanol fraction.
