The subject of this paper is the liminality occurred in occurred in spring flower viewing in Edo in terms of its site and its viewers. Its suburban location and flowers made the site a border between city and country, culture and nature, and life and death. Among strangers, freed from their social ranks or sexual frames, were seen close human relations. Apart from their ordinary lives, they enjoyed communication through presenting their poems, performing in disguise, or behaving in unusual manners.
