THIS PAPER EXAMINED THE TREND OF BUS-BASED TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT AND ITS APPLICABILITY ON JAPANESE CITIES. ALTHOUGH THE ORIGINAL CONCEPT WAS DEVELOPED IN USA, INTERESTING CASES ARE FOUND IN OTHER COUNTRIES, SUCH AS NEIGHBORHOOD PLAN WITH CENTER-LOCATED BUS STOPS, SEVERAL THOSE NEIGHBORHOODS CONNECTED BY BUSWAYS, BUS STOPS WITH COMFORTABLE POCKET PARKS, EXISTING CITIES WITH SEVERAL AXES OF BUSWAYS AND SO ON. IN THOSE PROJECTS, NOT ONLY BETTER ACCESS TO BUS STOPS WITH HIGHER DENSITY DEVELOPMENT BUT CONVENIENT BUS SERVICE WITH REGULARITY HAS BEEN TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION. REGARDING THE APPLICATION TO JAPANESE CITIES, SUCH AN INTEGRATION OF BUS TRANSIT PLANNING AND URBAN PLANNING IS FOUND TO BE EFFECTIVE ON MODAL SHIFT IN CASE GOOD BUS SERVICE IS PROVIDED.
